The Florida Constitution protects local rights to govern by establishing “Home Rule”. 

The exception to this is if legislation is passed in Tallahassee that specifically removes a local government’s authority by making a rule that applies to the entire state. 

I’ve been recognized twice by the Florida League of Cities as a “Home Rule Hero” because I engage our legislators when they are attempting to pass legislation that preempts Home Rule. 

Tallahassee should spend time focusing on issues that impact the entire state and much less time trying to protect the interests of developers and industry by removing local control.

However, they continue to successfully pass legislation that prevents local governments from listening to citizens.
